ACHIEVEMENTS
Sponsor of
the Newport Christmas House Tour, "Newport Proud" and
Christmas decoration awards.
Facade
Improvement Program, established by NRI, awarded almost
$50,000 in matching grants to the borough residents making
improvement to their facades.
Supported
the efforts, which resulted in the Pennsylvania Historic and
Museum Commission to include the borough in the National Register
of Historic Places.
Cooperated
with the Tri-County Housing Development Corporation to obtain
funding to refurbish the Butz building, described as the
"keystone" of Newport's downtown revitalization.
Assisted
the borough in obtaining federal funds of over $770,000 for
Newport's "Streetscape" plans for improvements to the
town square.
Obtained a
$26,500 matching-fund grant from the Department of Conservation
& Natural Resources for a study of a river walk along the west
side of the Juniata River. The study was completed and submitted
to DCNR.
Recipients
of a "Townie" Award given by the Pennsylvania Downtown
Center for Design and Physical Improvement for the improvements
and restoration to buildings in the square and for the
rehabilitation of the Butz building.
