1852 RICE"S STAGE COACH business was owned and operated by Zachariah Rice Sr. and his seven sons, operating on the old Allegheny Pass which later became the Carlise-Sunbury Road. The inauguration of the number of the old Perry County stage lines dates to the following periods:

     Landisburg to New Germantown, 17 miles -1855           Ickesburg to Newport,  16 miles-1864

     Landisburg to Newporr, 17 miles-1852          `               Ickesburg to Millerstown, 12 miles-1864

On January 10, 1856, the Post Office Department advertised for bids carrying the mails for a four year period and Mr. Rice was awarded the contracct, many of which he sublet. The coach is in front of the Gantt's Hotel & Store on Market Street, Newport, PA.
