THE NEWPORT SCHOOL was built in 1865 with the first class graduating in 1887. During the summer of 1867 Silas Wright, later County Superintendent of schools, opened his Normal School in this building. It was demolished in May 1911 to be replaced by the present Fourth Street building [now an apartment building].
