Beard Museum Inventory
129 North Second, The Louise Beard Memorial
Museum is maintained by
the Newport Revitalization & Preservation Society. The Louise Beard Museum
was bequeathed to the 'towns' people' in 1938 by Katherine Leiby Howe Beard as a
memorial to her daughter, Louise. The home was built in the 1890s by Mr.
and Mrs. Horace Beard and was the site of many brilliant and festive soirees at
the turn of the century. The second floor museum houses a wonderful collection
of Newport memorabilia including advertising from early merchants, clothing worn
to Newport's gala social events and furniture and antiques used by our
forbearers.
The inventory list is sorted by family and date, thus telling the history of the families. It is very long! Select a pages from below; you can always read them later as long as you do not close them.

Photograph-Elias Bixler Leiby, son of Samuel and
Eve Smith Leiby, born 1846 at home of parents, corner s. 2nd
St. and Spruce Alley, Newport. Educated in Newport schools and
Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove. Member Reformed church,
S.S.Supt, S.S. teacher for more than 65 years, church elder. Merchant.
Knights of Pythias. Member Newport Masonic Lodge and Past Master of the
same. Postmaster, Marysville. President Marysville Bank. In lumber and
fire insurance business. Married Jemia Jane Smith. One son: Scott Smith
Leiby. Died in Harrisburg 1932. Buried in Newport Cemetery |

Square, 1833, Died 1927 in this house (Louise Beard Memorial),
129 N. 2nd Street. Confirmed in
Lutheran Church 1851. Attended Miss Paine’s School, Carlisle 1854.
Married Dr. Wm R. Howe Oct 23, 1856 at her
parent’s home in Oliver Twp. Choir singer, Sunday School Teach,
charter member of Women’s Missionary Society of Newport Lutheran
Church. Buried on Glanding- Howe lot in Newport Cemetery. Had two
daughters: Annie Eva Howe (Glanding) and Katherine Howe (Beard).

Photograph-Catherine Leiby Kohler Brown Fishburn,
daughter of Samuel and Eve Smith Leiby, born 1831at the home of her
grandparents, John and Catherine Lesh Smith in Oliver Twp. Died 1906 in
Newport and buried in Newport Cemetery. The name “Catherine Brown”
appears on her [grave] stone because of the high esteem in which Dr.
Brown was held by her descendants. Confirmed in Luther Church 1847,
deeply religious |

1810 by a mill at Lesh’s Creek in Bethel Twp, Berks Co. Daughter of
John and Catherine Lesh Smith. Was a child in arms when her parents
migrated to Perry Co. Died in Oliver Twp. 1876; she is buried in Newport
Cemetery. Member of Reformed Church. She was a typical homemaker and
mother of the 19th century. [7 children] With her help and
under her supervision at her farm home in Oliver Twp. Wool was carded
and spun; blankets woven; flax was
spun; linen sheets and towels were woven; candles were molded. A
dressmaker (Barbara Lenig, a cousin was there weeks at a time doing hand
sewing for the large family. Making home wines, churning butter, baking,
butchering, drying fruit, curing hams, boiling apple butter, atc.- all
these home processes were typical of the day. It was in this home that
Katherine Libey Howe (Beard) lived for the first 16 years of her life,
and the gracious hospitality of her grandparents so endeared them to her
that she cherished articles belonging to them, and in this way many of
these museum exhibits were preserved |
