Photograph-Samuel Leiby. Born 1804, ˝ mile from
Mannsville, Center Twp, Perry Co in a section called Pleasant Valley.
Married Eve Smith. Died 1867 in Oliver Twp. Buried Newport Cemetery. Son
of Frederick and Margaret Lambert Leiby. Extensive landowner,
businessman and farmer. Western traveler. First storekeeper in Newport
1832. First burgess of Newport 1840. An incorporator of the Perry Co.
Mutual Fire Insurance Co. 1843. He boarded the first train that passed
through Newport and rode to Millerstown. Member of the Reformed Church. |

1906.Attended Newport Schools First married to
Frederick Kohler [see # 55/56] who lived only six months. Then married
Dr. Robert S. Brown, who lived only several years. Then married Dr. Isaac P. Fishburn, from whom she later separated. An
efficient business woman, clerking in the store of her brother, James B.
Leiby, for many years. Sunday school teacher for years. Member Luther
League, and charter member Women’s Missionary Society, Newport
Lutheran Church and its first president. Had two children: Samuel
Brown, who died about six and Cyrus Fishburn who died at birth |

Chair owned by Samuel Leiby and used by him in
his farm home in Oliver Twp. About 1850, Annie Howe said that when she
lived in his home as a little girl he used to rock her in this chair on
his lap Sunday afternoons. He would then sing hyms to her, one of which
was “There Is A land of Pure Delight” |

Records birth of Samuel Leiby, son of Fredrich and Margaret
(Lamper-same a s Lambert) Leiby on Jan. 1 1804 in Cumberland Co. (now
Perry Co.); baptized Feb. 20 1807 by Rev. Sanno. Sponsors were the
parents. On the back is written "Samuel Leiby was indermarried with
Eve Smith the first day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and thirty one A.D 1831" |

Snuffbox owned by Catherine Lesh Smith about 1810.
Presented by her great great grand daughter, Kathryn Campbell Albaugh.
On the base of the box is the following:” Grandma Smith’s snuffbox
when she was a young lady (18). Presented to her grandson Dr. G. W.
Campbell, when he was a small boy. The box contained a one dollar gold
piece about 1855. “ Also: “From Papa tp M. Kathryn Campbell, Jan. 24th,
1912.” Under the picture in very fine letters is “Marie
Amelie Reine des Francais” |

“Churches Between the Mountains” A history
of Lutheran Congregations in Perry Co., by Rev D.H.Focht. Front piece
shows Christ Lutheran Church, New Bloomfield. Here began the romance
between Eve Smith and Samuel Leiby when the latter helped the former
from her horse as they came to catechize. This book shows she was
confirmed in 1818. Samuel Leiby was baptized by Rev. Sanno, a minister
of this church, as shown
by his taufschein in this room. |
