There were original Baker families in Markelsville from about 1820 to after 1900. The 1820 census shows that a Baker, John household consisted of 2 males between 10-17,  4 males over 46,  1 female between 266-45, and  1 black male between 16-26. The internet shows no entries for a John Baker at that time except for the 1820 census.

BAKER  Samuel    1797- 1866  married Elizabeth 1805-1884. Their son, Samuel, 1831-1864, died Staunton Hospital, D.C. of gunshot wound,  Battle of Spottsylvania, Va.  Funeral sermon by Rev. P.B. Lane.  All are buried at St. John's Lot #158.

BAKER Peter 1797-1874  m. Jane  1800- 1876. He must have been the father of John T. Baker because they are buried in the same lot #214 at St. John's.

BAKER William  1827- 1916 married  Louisa  1834- 1924. Both are buried at St. John's  Lot #151

BAKER John S.1839- 1889   He served in the Co. E., 208th Regt. P.V. He married Elizabeth 1840- 1889 at the age of 49.
Their children were Alice M. d. 1880 4 days old and  Stella M. 1878- 1887.  All are buried at St. John's Lot #164

BAKER, John T. b.1844 in Juniata township, died 1902 of blood poison. It is probably that John was the son of Peter Baker. John married first Mary E. Moul born in 1849. Mary E. Moul Baker died in 1895. In 1900 John T Baker married Mary Amelia Lyons in Eschol.. She is not buried at St. John's!. Both John and Mary E. are buried at St. John's Lot #214. John T. Baker was a farmer and serviced in the Civil War. BAKER, JOHN, mustered in 11 Aug 1862, mustered out with company 26 May 1863. From Tuscarora Twp.

After the death of John T. Baker in 1902, his second wife applied to Government for pension for John's minor children. She was denied on the grounds that she was not their natural mother. Mr. John R. Boden contested her petition and he was made guardian of the minor: Annie, Benjamin, Bertha and Andrew J Baker.

Apparently John T. Baker owned considerable acreage in/around "Little Vienna"/Markelville. In 1903 two tracts of land were conveyed by his children to Margaret Foose by two deeds dated 1903. Tract #1 was seven acres bounded north by  a public road [RT 849], on the east by lansds of Charles Adams and Samual Snyder, on the south by Lewis Baker [son of John T.] and on the west by a public road [Robinson Rd].  Erected on the property is a two story frame dwelling house, stable and outbuildings.  In 1993, 41/2 acres  this property is 7001 Creek Rd [Ann Smullen] Tract #2 was  9 acres lying north of Middle Ridge Rd. The lot was bordered on the north by lands of Charles Adams; on the south by lands of Selvia Long, and on the west by lands of George D. Robinson.

A local paper featured an article in 1917:

"Children of the Late John T. and Mary E. Baker

      PHOTHOGRAPH OF HIS TEN CHILDREN

The descendants of John T. and Mary E. (Moul) Baker, deceased, gathered from their distant homes at the old homestead on Hominy Ridge, Juniata township, Tuesday May 29, 1917, and together spent a most enjoyable day where childhood memory will ever cling. The two parental links of the family chain were absent, having "passed over" several years ago, still how every familiar spot in the old home recalls the dear presence of a father and mother kind and protecting. There were 14 children in this union, comprising one of the largest and best families in this part of Perry county, ten of which were present at the reunion, as the above photograph will shaow, namely:  ..... . Those absent were Jerry, Pittsburg; John, Mendota Ill., and Lewis A. and Maggies J., deceased. Others present were .. . . [wives, husbands  and children]. Photographer Morrow took a picture of all present, and after gathering around a bountifully-spread table, the meeting was ended witha declaration the "meeting again" in the old home brings much happiness and pleasure."
