Nicholas BURD was Jabob's grandfather, Nicholas, was born 1728 in Scotland. He and his wife, Magdalena, settled in Tyrone Twp, Cumberland County PA. some time between 1747and 1749. Remember Perry Co. was once part of Cumberland Co. They had three children. Mathias, Jacob and Barbara.Mathias Sr. BURD (1747/49 - 1817) was Jacob's father. Mathias fought in the Revolution 1776 in Pennsylvania. Mathias was 36 years old when he met a young maiden of twenty and fell in love. Mathias and his wife (Catharina (Catherine) PENTER\BENDER\PAINTER) were married 24 Nov 1783 in Cumberland (Perry) Co., Pennsylvania. They had seven children:
Mathias was a shoemaker by trade. When he died in 1817 he was buried on the family farm.
Jacob BURD (1785 - 1869) and his four brothers and two sisters grew up in Saville Twp. which is now in Perry County. He lived to be 84 and is buried in the Markelsville cemetery. He married a girl from Saville. Jacob and Sarah LEIBY b: 1788 in Saville Twp. were married some time before 1810. They had thirteen children:John BURD (1795/99 - 1883/88) The cemetery marker indicates he died 1888 in his 87th year. John married Catharine Rice. Their first child, John W. Burd , was born about 1818. Nicholas was born about 1830 and Washington was born 1841. In all they had ten children. John Burd shows up as head of household in the 1880 Census as living in Saville Twp., Perry Co.
!855 John and Catharine (Rice) Burd bid farewell to their sons and their families. John W., Nicholas, Jeremiah, Solomon, and Israel will lead their stage train west to Illinois. Apparently only Washington Burd and his wife remained in Perry county, and they had no children. Uncle Jacob, Aunt Sarah and their children lived in Perry County.
-------- Jacob Burd's Children---------
George BURD (1813-?) is recorded as head of household in both the 1850 and 1880 Census as living in Juniata Twp. Perry Co. www.rootsweb.com indicates Rachel as the 1st marriage and Susannah as the second marriage. Could it be that rootsweb has the children mixed up? Was Rachel his 1st wife and they had only one daughter, Mollie, born 1857. After Rachel died in 1863, George Burd buried his wife and left Markelsvillle. George then remarried Susannah. www.rootsweb.com lists his children as following:
- Lydia BURD b: ABT 1866 in Pennsylvania
- Matilda BURD b: ABT 1868 in Pennsylvania
- Frederick BURD b: ABT 1870 in Pennsylvania

Jacob, Jr. BURD was born 16 FEB 1816 in Loysville, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He died 1866 in Markelsville, and is buried in Markelsville. He married Margaret Motzer and they had three children born between 1841 and 1849. They lived in Madison Twp, Perry Co. according to the 1850 Census
