Henry LONG (1764-1842) was born in Lancaster, died in Saville Twp. and buried at St. Andrew Chuchyard, Eschol, Saville Twp. He was of German nationality... a wagon-maker (under Saville Twp. taxables in 1820 ). A tract of land consisting of 33 acres, 148 perches and allowance, patented to Henry Long. Property Surveyed 14 December 1830. Perry Co., PA. According to the Biographical Encyclopedia, "Henry Long came to Perry county in 1800; he was a wagon-maker and farmer." PA 1800 Census (Roll #35-Vol.1), Henry (age 36)is shown in Berwick Twp., Cumberland Co. Deed: 1 May 1813 Patrick Duffield & wife to Henry Long (of Tyrone Twp., Cumberland Co., PA), wagonmaker of the other part...for $320. Indenture: 1 May 1819 Benjamin Long...and Henry Long...yeoman..$400. Henry Long  lived in Eschol; married three times, had eleven children (5 boys)

1. Peter LONG (1792-1861) He died 1861 and buried in St. Andre Churchyard, Eschol, funeral by Rev Focht. He too was a wagon-maker and Lutheran. He married Rebecca Hall and they lived in Saville Twp. Peter Long came to Perry County when he was eight years old. He learned wagon-making, but afterwards farmed. 1850 Census, Saville Twp., Perry Co., PA. All on one stone at the cemetery are listed:  Peter Long (68 yrs-8 mos-1 da); Rebecca Hall (91-9-28), "She died as she lived - a Christian";Joanna Long (57-2-27), "At Rest"; & David Long (68 yrs-22das), "Weep not he is at rest". They had children

Mr. Long was school director in Centre township for three years. In 1877, he was elected triennial assessor and tax collector, and in 1883 justice of the peace, served five years, and was re-elected in 1888, and again in 1893, and resigned in January, 1896, when he became director of the poor. He has served as auditor, and settled many estates; he was appointed guardian of a family of ten children. Mr. Long is a member of Grange No. 626, P. of H.

2. Henry Long (1794-1876) son of Henry Long 1764-1842, resided in Donally Mills, buries St. Andrew Church yard, Eschcol; wagon-maker(conestoga).  The date of Henry's death is on the marker in the cemetery at Eshcol. (He was 82 yrs.2 mos.) He married 1834 Bandena Flickenger  b. 1801 in Ickesburg; they had two daughters and two sons. No grandchildren were listed.

3. John Long (1804-1883) son of Henry Long (1764-1842), buried St. Andrew Churchyard, Eshcol; (Named for his paternal grandfather?!); married Elizabeth Miller (1805- ?). They had four children:

4. Daniel Long (1807-1891) , son of Henry Long and Margaret Kerr Long. They had two daughter: Elizabeth and Martha born in Perry Co.

5. Isaac Long (1813-1883), son of Henry Long, born and died in Saville  and buried in St. Andrew Churchyard. He was a farmer of the old family homestead, a Lutheran attending St. Andrew Church. He married (1) Elizabeth Smith and (2) Susannah Bernheisel. 

According to a Perry Co., PA (subscription) published history, "... Isaac Long was born on the homestead in Saville township ... He received a good education, making the best of the scanty facilities then afforded. Although he partly acquired the trade of wagon-making in his father's shop, he preferred farming, which he learned at the same time, and followed it as his calling throughout life. After his marriage, he bought the homestead of his father, with the condition that besides paying a stipulated sum, he was to maintain his parents so long as they should live. ... (he) was in early manhood a Whig; he afterwards attached himself to the Republican Party. He died on the place on which he was born. ... They were devout Christians, faithful members of the Lutheran Church, in which Mr. Long was for many years an office-bearer." (This information would have been submitted by a family member.)

Marriage 1 Elizabeth SMITH b: 27 May 1820  Isaac Long's first wife, Elizabeth, was only 25 when she died of complications from childbirth (presumably!) just a week after newborn daughter, Catherine (for her paternal grandmother) Orlinda, died ... and only three days after Christmas. What a sad time that must have been for Isaac and his three motherless little boys! A monument in the churchyard cemetery at Eshcol, PA, reads: "To Mother and Sister by H.F. Long."

Lewis Long (1849-1932), buried in Walnut Grove Methodist Churchyard married Catherine Elizabeth Beistlein/ Bistline (1851-1924) They had two sons, who died as infants. Elizabeth's parents were Samuel Bistline and Elizabeth Stutzman, who are buried in St. John's Churchyard.
