Senior Citizen Center, 35 South 2nd
Street - had been a funeral home since the late 1800s, originally run by
Jacob Hopple, followed by WH Hopple and then Lee Kell. Many funeral homes in the
1800s were outgrowths of a cabinetmaking business. Originally, when there was a
death, the family would contact the local cabinetmaker to make a coffin - later
they asked that the cabinetmaker transport the coffin to the home, then the
church and cemetery. Eventually, the cabinetmaker was also asked to prepare the
body. Predating the funeral home, this was the site of an early 1800s house
built of sawed logs by Dan Rider. The center began with funds from Penna.
Elderly Flood Emergency Program following hurricane “Agnes” in 1972. The
doors of the Senior Citizen Center opened its doors in 1973 to all older
Americans.
