Fourth Street School - Now an apartment house, this elementary school building was built in 1911 for use as a high school. The original school building on this site was bui1t in 1865, not including the wings on either side. Its cost was $6000. It was considered by many to be an “unpardonable extravagance." During the summer of 1867 Silas Wright opened his Normal School in this building. One wing was added in 1874, and the other in 1888. The entire building was razed in May 1911 and during the summer the present building was erected. This building accommodated the first six grades until 1969 when the existing elementary school was built at the cost of $1,980,000.
