Fire was an ever-present threat to early Newport, and when it struck, the townspeople with no means and were helpless. In 1874 a fire raged through the square destroying many buildings, including the Gantt Hotel and eleven businesses. A newspaper from 1888 reports a movement afoot for the town to purchase a hook and ladder to protect itself from the ravages of fire. In 1895, the fire company was founded and received its first modern fire equipment. A new fire house was built on South 3rd Street in 1956, which is now the ambulance building. Today’s newest firehouse is located on Mulberry Street at the foot of South 3rd Street.   ShearBeauty.jpg (22893 bytes)
