The U.S. Army Training Camp,
Company F of the 3rd Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, was set up
May 2, 1917 with 30 trainees. When they broke camp Aug 14, there were
126 men with 18 tents and a cooking bungalow. Their duties were to guard
the bridges, tunnels and canal locks west of the Susquehanna River. The
hill to the right was emblazoned with the Company insignia. Today the
camp site is occupied by the Newport Junior-Senior High School. Note the
