Bitting’s, 16 N 2nd St. - The two-story brick dwelling is today Bitting's Restaurant. At the time of the Fire of 1874, this was an empty lot that extended to the hotel. The building was built sometime after 1875. It has a very elaborate history. In 1878, J. W. Smith and Son Hardware occupied the building. It then became Brandt’s and Mathna’s Hardware. In 1890, the newspaper The Newport Ledger was on the second floor.

The little building next door  was the Just for Fun Travel. Note the peak roof line of the building. When the Eby's bought the building for the travel business they had to do some reconstruction work on the roof because all the snow from the tall Biting  Building next door fell onto their roof! If you look closely at the south side of the building you will find the original clap board siding. It has been said that this building once sold fresh produce.
