Sharar's Grocery & Video - There has been a small store similar to Sharar's Grocery at this location since at least the mid 1800's.  At the turn of the century, this was a candy store owned by Curtis "Candy" Smith, who was a candy wholesaler specializing in clear toy candy.   At one time, the Newport Bottling Company bottled soda in the basement of this building. Candy Smith's was also a wholesaler and retailer of dry goods, musical instruments and other items. The building was also used as the family residence. The Smiths delivered their goods by means of sleighs and wagons, which were housed at the rear of the property. The business was then bought by George Rhoades and operated as a retail grocery merchant until purchased by Robert Myers. The store sold groceries and dry goods and deli items. At some point in time (circa 1940's) the rear addition was used as a small warehouse for the local Western Auto Store. On Oct. 1, 1979, the Sharar family, the current proprietors, bought the business. Since then Sharar’s has served Newport with many deli items plus the latest videos.
