Accomplishments

Members of NRPS have worked diligently over the years to make Newport a better place to live. The following list highlights our efforts.

— Annually organize the Christmas House Tour, Canal Day and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

— Revitalization of Veterans Memorial Park, including the entrance, playground, pavillions and tennis courts through the Veterans Memorial Park Project.

— Railroad station placed on the 2008 Pennsylvania at Risk list by Preservation Pennsylvania. Read about the railroad station on page 8 of the report.

— Created the Facade Improvement Program, established by NRI, which awarded approximately $50,000 in matching grants to Borough residents who made improvements to their facades.

— Supported the efforts that results in the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission to include the Borough in the National Register of Historic Places.

— Cooperated with Tri-County Housing Development Corporation to obtain funding to refurbish the Butz building at One South Second Street, described as the "keystone" of Newport's downtown revitalization.

— Received a Townie Award from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center for restoration efforts.

— Assisted the Borough in obtaining federal funds for Newport's Streetscape Enhancements Plan for improvements to the town square.

— Implemented the Buy a Brick campaign to raise funds for Streetscape enhancements.

— Donated funds to the Perry County Council of the Arts Newport 1885 mural by artist Biruta Hansen depecting the Pennsylvania Canal.
