The Riverwalk

Start from the "Bridge" and walk north,
following the river; continue until you reach the "subway".
Under the railroad bridge, to the left if you're heading out of Newport, is an access to the Juniata River used by the fire company and a few stray party animals. Thanks to a grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the road could become an access point to the town's river heritage. Susan Connell explained that the idea for the walk came from Newport residents who came to NRPS expressing the desire for an access along the river that would be conducive to family outings.
The river walk represents a chance to reclaim the town's river heritage. Newport effectively became separated from the river when the railroad filled in the old Pennsylvania Canal and installed tracks. "It just completely changed the make-up of the town." Negotiations with the railroad concerning the need for work on their property began under Conrail's watch and continued now that Norfolk Southern has taken over. The railroad has agreed that the bank can be cleared so long as large trees are not taken out. Removing the larger trees with their extensive root systems could compromise the safety of the railroad bed. One goal of the project is to make the river more accessible for canoes. Lighting and picnic benches may be added to the walk, but Connell warns people not to expect anything fancy.
"We just want it really, really simple and inviting to people who want to bring children down here," she said. A steering committee was formed and conducted interviews with church groups and civic organizations for input on the project. The committee's most important task was to develop a scope of work which must be approved by DCNR. We did it! DCNR awarded Newport a matching grant of $98,000. for the Newport Riverwalk Plaza. Upon DCNR's approval of the submitted preliminary plan construction can begin. Looking at the Juniata River Bridge from a spot along the future river walk, Connell mentioned that the walk will provide a more inviting gateway into town. Maybe in the future, the river walk will be incorporated into Newport's Canal Day or other special events. It will be the kind of place that draws people. "It would be a lovely place to come all throughout the year."
